Chapter 14

At 6 p.m. on the dot I heard Luc’s car pull into the driveway.

When I opened the front door, Luc was out of the car and circling around to the rear of it. He popped the hatch and then helped the big guy out from the back of the car. Big doggie, small car. Raven comfortably out of the car, Luc grabbed a large bag of what looked like dog food, and then the two of them rambled up the drive.

“Hey, Lynn!” Luc said, seeing me.

Raven’s attention shifted at his master’s words, his slow gait changing to fast forward allowing him to beat Luc to the front steps and up to the doorway to meet to me.

“Hello, my best-boy,” I said, bending down for my greeting. Playing with his ears, I rubbed my face into his. “Did you miss me? I missed you.”

“Hey Luc,” I said, pretending I’d only just seen him.

“I see Raven has forgotten all about the guy who feeds—walks and bathes him.” He gave me a big grin, passing by us into the house.

“What can I say—he loves me,” I said, letting Raven in then shutting the door behind us.

Raven did his usual scoped-the-place-out routine while Luc went to drop off his gear to his usual room at Hotel Lockridge.

“First time he’s been back since we fixed the place up,” I called out to Luc, as I watched the big doggie go from room to room, checking the safe-haven.

“You’ve added more stuff around the house too, so he’ll need to check… every... single... thing!” Luc called, on his way back down the hall to the living room.

We both chuckled, watching Raven as he continued his rounds.

“Whattaya got to eat,” Luc said, rubbing his palms together.

“And people think I’m a walking stomach,” I responded, heading for the kitchen.

Naturally Luc followed. “It’s your fault. Always bribing me with food,” Luc said, opening and shutting the cupboards on his hunt for nourishment.

He’d miss the food prep and cookies on the island, so I said, “I could share a little of this healthy casserole I made.” Vicki had sent me the recipe for the healthy mac’n cheesy-goodness.

Smiling big he said, “Bring it!” then pulled a stool out from under the island. Sitting, his smile spread in eagerness of being fed.

Raven walked in then, his doggie grin telling us there was another stomach needing to be fed.

“Okay, feed him first and it’s a deal,” I said, pointing a thumb back in Raven’s direction.

“Deal,” Luc said, then was up off the stool before I could continue with the deal part.

A second later Raven was munching away on his dinner and Luc was perched back up on the stool. Grinning again.

I grinned back and moved to stand in front of the fridge. “Right. I’ll share myyyyyy yummy food with you, but you have to sit quietly and eat while I tell you all about my trip. Deal?”

“Deal,” he shot out again with no hesitation, and definitely past hungry.

“We still have to wait for it to cook,” I told him.
